We spent the last night of the trip in Durango, CO. We both decided that we'd already been through Santa Fe, and wanted to see some different country, so we decided to head due East through Pagosa Springs. I had noticed in one of the tourist magazines that there was a Fred Harman Art Museum there, and decided to stop and check it out. For those that don't know, Fred Harman was the artist and creator of the Red Ryder comic strip which appeared in both comic books and newspapers back when I was a young'un and dinosaurs roamed the earth. And absolutely everyone had a Daisy Red Ryder BB gun - or wanted one! This is the easel where Fred drew the comic strip. Pictures and memorabilia on the wall include photos of just about everybody from President Truman to John Wayne to Walt Disney (After working together in Kansas City, Walt and Fred formed their first business venture together and went bust within a year. Fred came back to Colorado and started up Red Ryder, to the the largest syndicated cartoon strip in the country, and his brothers went on to form Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies and were also quite successful.) |
