Texas State Fair 2002

  Sand Sculpture

We headed over Science Place where we planned to visit the IMAX. Outside was one of the largest Sand Sculptures I've seen. Two men were still working on it as we watched. You can see that Big Tex even made it on there. He's going to need a bigger hat next year!

We had noticed that "Mystery of Egypt", a National Geographic movie with Omar Sharif was playing again at the IMAX. We saw it a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it, so we went again. Scenes like this one, evidently taken from a helicopter hovering just off from the Great Pyramids, are even better than being there in real life.  You can almost reach out and touch the stones. Great movie!

Map showing Texas in the 1550's

I also had to stop in at the Natural History Museum to see an exhibit of original Texas maps. The earliest was this one dating to the 1550's. Seems they had a hazy view of the "New World", but Florida and Texas are already recognizable. Very interesting exhibit.

They also have some other great exhibitions including a new one on venomous creatures of Texas such as snakes, scorpions, and spiders.

Of course we had to see the parade before we left, and as usual, the U.S. Marine Corp. led it off with their great band.
